The joint Africa Union and European Union initiative exploring solid waste as a resource, seeks to establish a joint research and innovation agenda on waste management. This initiative is to increase understanding on the resource potential of solid waste and the opportunities to innovate at both a technical and social level to make full use of this reservoir of discarded materials. The potential of solid waste to meet our needs for raw materials such as metals, plastics and rare earths is great. Much of what we throw away can be reused and recycled, thereby significantly reducing resource consumption and depletion. However, there is no common agreement or understanding on the opportunities for using solid waste, nor on the technical and social innovations required to take full advantage of this resource.
The initiative is being led by the European Commission Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) together with the African Union Secretariat in Addis Ababa, with support from the European Parliament. Prospex designed and implemented the first conference in Addis Ababa and the follow-up high-level conference in November 2013 in Brussels.
