Equality between women and men is a fundamental value of the EU enshrined in the Treaties. The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) works closely with Member States to promote gender mainstreaming, prevent gender-based violence, fight discrimination based on sex and raise awareness on gender equality. As part of this work EIGE created the first ever EU Gender Equality Index. This composite indicator on gender equality reflects the multi-faceted reality of gender equality, and is specifically tailored towards the policy framework of the European Union and Member States (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNicVn0St-w)
In the run up to the launch of the Gender Equality Index on 13 June 2013, Prospex was asked to design and facilitate four regional workshops bringing together leading experts, policy-makers and statisticians from all EU Member States. The aim of the workshops in Vilnius, Warsaw, Paris and Rome was to present the conceptual framework and preliminary results of the Gender Equality Index and discuss its benefits and possible use. Using participatory and interactive workshop techniques, stakeholders were able to explore the index with EIGE, identify issues that might be sensitive or controversial in their countries, create links with national authorities and begin long-term planning to support the index in the future.
